Main CSSCGC 2008 Website is at http://reptonix.awardspace.co.uk/sinclair/csscgc2008/

Hello Specchums,

This is a place where games submitted to CSSCGC 2008 can be discussed, in addition to CSS and the WOS forums.

It exists solely for this purpose, since not all CSS users visit WOS, and not all WOS users visit CSS. So it may be useful to have a place like this where all competition entrants and spectators alike can discuss the games submitted in 2008.

There are no really strict posting rules, however as a guideline we'll assume the same rules as found on WOS regarding politeness to others and maintaining civilty etc.. also hold here.

As a rough guide, we can have one thread per submitted game, but this is certainly not written in stone. This is another reason for the existance of this board - having one thread per game would likely cause excessive clutter in CSS and WOS,

Regards, DP

Just a quick note to say, now that the forum is actually being used by a few people, I have attempted to back it up, but alas because I only have a free account on makeforum.org, the backup option is disabled on the admin panel for this forum.

So if you want to post any important things on here, then please keep a backup of any such data on your own system, or elsewhere on the Internet, because if the forum happens to go offline during 2008 then I'm sorry to say that probably won't be recoverable. The need to back things up probably doesn't apply to anything that has been posted until now, as it's mainly just been casual chatter.

As a workaround, I do save all the threads out manually as HTML though, in the hope that no information will be lost for posterity! But as this takes quite a while for me to do manually, I'm only doing it once a week at the weekend, so up to a week of postings could be lost in the event of something catastrophic happening.

Having said all this, I've no reason to think that the forum will go offline during 2008, but as this system is managed by the good people at makeforum.org (i.e. not me), it's something which is theoretically outside my own personal control. Also, I'm happy to report that it's been running at 100% availability until now, and I'm very happy with it.

Regards, DP

Hi All,

I'm just reposting part of this post from WoS on here, as people have continued to seek clarification of why some previously submitted "extreme" games could not be entered into CSSCGC 2008 and/or may have questions about any games they are thinking about writing themselves. This post will be linked to from the main CSSCGC 2008 site rules section and hopefully everyone can be aware of the full story behind what happened last month, and why a very small number of games regrettably had to be rejected.

Quote:

( from 20/02/08 )

Before I sign off for today, I wanted to make a quick note about the CSSCGC 2008 rules regarding offensive games.

I'm glad that people have continued to contact me regarding this matter, and I have sent you all similar replies, but I now realise it's probably easier all round if I just post exactly what happened last month here. It's the first time I feel comfortable enough to mention it on here (probably because the situation has "blown over" a little, and the fact I have already PMed and emailed several people about this).

Basically, I work in a university. Many of the people who I work with are from Afghanistan, Pakistan (Pashtun people) and Iraq (particulalry from Baghdad). Also, many of my colleagues currently have families in Baghdad right now.

My place of work has been under MI5 surviellence for a couple of months, due to tip offs of potential terrorist activity, and just a few weeks back Special Branch and the police were called out to interview some of us after someone left a VHS tape of an episode of the documentary programme "Panorama" featuring Islamic terrorism lying around in a video recorder.

Of course "Sod's law" dictates that just mere days after this, someone sends me a crap game where you play an Islamist terrorist, and the goal is to kill as many innocent people as possible.

Clearly I could not possibly accept this game in the current workplace environment, it was completely impossible for me to do this. Doing so could have got me into some really serious trouble.

Other games rejected in the same week featured hard core p*rnography which would also nullify my google ads agreement that I had only just set up a few days previously.

I hope everyone could understand the very difficult position I found myself in.

So, because of the above, I am unable to accept any games featuring terrorism or hard core p*rnorgraphy this year. Sad

However apart from these things, it is pretty much anything goes, so I do very much look forward to many further entertaining games! Very Happy

So, that's pretty much this matter closed now, but as always if you have any further queries on this then you are very welcome to post questions, or contact me directly via email or WoS PM.

Best Regards, DP

Oops, the times on this forum are still showing as GMT.

That was correct in the Winter, but not too good now that we are on BST. I'll see if I can fix this in the "Admin Panel".

OK, well I changed this system-wide setting in the forum admin panel to GMT +1, and it made no difference. EDIT: I have now found out that it affects users who aren't logged in. I have left this set to UK time for now, i.e GMT +1 during the summer.

But, the timezone settings are stored in each user's profile, so you need to go into your own profile, and change the timezone Manually to "GMT +1" (For those of you in the UK at least, that will make the times appear correct until late October anyway).

I could not find a setting to automatically adjust for Daylight Savings time.

Cheers, DP

Thanks very much to SnakOilSteve for assembling the "CSSCGC 2008 April MegaTape", and providing the printable cassette inlay for it.

The tapefile bundle is now available for download from the Magazine Page:-
http://reptonix.awardspace.co.uk/sin...gc2008/mag.htm

The April MegaTape is a two-sided tape containing the tape magazine itself and last month's Crap Game Compo entries, which Steve added.

This month's magazine also features AY chip music again from "The Simulacra" for 128K/+2 etc.. systems, and some machine code improvements (thanks to various help from WoS forum members).

(crossposted from comp.sys.sinclair)

CSSCGC 2008 - Rule Change

I have a few very good reasons to change the rule about picking the host for CSSCGC 2009, which I am about to do.

I have come to realise two things over the last couple of months:-

(1) Some prospective entrants do not like the potentially small risk of being saddled with hosting the compo next year, particularly if they have never set up a website before.

This appears to be offputting to some people who would otherwise enter the compo.

A handful of people have e-mailed me pretty much suggesting they are unable to set a website up for various reasons. One or two have also said the same on various forums.

That's fine, I perfectly understand this. Perhaps this "risk" seems even more likely to potential ZX81/ZX80 entrants since I myself lost last year's compo due to a ZX81 entry.

(2) Other people have presented good, fresh ideas for hosting next year's competition, which I think the CGC would really benefit from, and breath new life into it in 2009.

Clearly some people have a lot of enthusiasm to do this, so it seems correct that anyone who has an undying wish to host the CGC should be given the opportunity to do so.

So, if I can arrange with someone this year to host next year's compo, then it will give them plenty of time to prepare (not that much is needed). Also this will remove the potential offputting "threat" of compo hosting for people who really would not want to do this.

Therefore, this year's rule about hosting CSSCGC 2009 is changed as follows:-

Whoever simply e-mails me (from this moment) to say they genuinely would like to host next year's compo, then it is yours. You are very welcome to host it. Please send any such e-mail to the CSSCGC 2008 compo submission address.

You need not have even entered this year's compo, just simply have an enthusiasm for being a CGC host and the means to set up a simple website.

If I don't receive any offers, then the old rule will still stand and the loser of CSSCGC 2008 will be required to host next year's CGC as before. If I do recieve any eamils about this, then I will announce next year's host on here.

I'm hoping that someone does offer to be next year's host, because I believe it would encourage more people to enter this year's CSSCGC compo, and keep the CGC going strong in the future. Well that's my rationale for changing the rule anyway!

I'll update the rule section on the CSSCGC 2008 website shortly (I haven't done this yet).

Cheers, DP

WorldofSpectrum forum member Vertigo has very kindly offered to host CSSCGC 2009.

So thanks very much to him, that's that issue done and dusted.

So, there's now no "danger" in losing the CSSCGC 2008 compo. I'm happy to say that there is no longer any possibility of being requested to host next year's compo, no matter how dire your entries may be!

I'll update the CSSCGC 2008 website soon to reflect this change in rules. (Not tonight though)
